20th JULY 2011 TEA IN THE CASTLE DAY

TEA IN THE CASTLE

Wednesday afternoons are traditionally the day that the Mayor and Mayoress entertain visitors from the official guided tour of Shrewsbury.

Today we were informed that no one had booked to take a tour around the town, so we had the choice stay at home and not do any teas, scones and biscuits, or to go to the castle see who was just visiting the Military Museum and within the castle grounds and just invite them in for a cup and an informal chat.

You guessed it we went and invited a number of people who were not together but somehow we picked everyone who either came from Leeds or York, so it was a Yorkshire day in the castle. One lady was just sitting reading in the castle grounds whilst her husband was in the County Archives looking up information for his family tree, so she asked for a photograph to show her husband that she had tea with the Mayor in the Mayors Parlour, otherwise he might think she had been in the sun to long.

ALL the others had their photos taken and we took a group shot for the blog before the last visitors left. We had a fantastic time just talking and relaxing with new friends.

They all said that it was something that they had never expected to happen, and they were keen to inform their families back home by “Bluetooth”.

We were pleased that we decided to go ahead and just invite people in, as next week we will not be able to do the teas in the castle as we have mayoral engagements that take us away from the town and even out of County.

Do you think we were right to do what we did and just pick people who just happened to be within the Castle grounds at the time.?

My mother, Aunt and Uncle were three of the people you entertained today and I can promise you it was the highlight of their visit to Shrewsbury!
My brother and wife live in Plox Green and my mother and aunt spend a week with them every summer. It was Uncle’s first visit so Mum and Aunty took him off to show him around Shrewbury town which they are very fond of and know very well after many visits .
Imagine Uncle’s suprise when they all ended up having tea with the Mayor and his wife! Uncle texted me to say “had a great day wi t’owd gels in’t Shrewbury. It’s a good job us from Yorkshire will have tea an scones wi anybody”. ! !
Thank you so much, they had a lovely day.
