20th APRIL 2012 NEW FEEMEN/WOMEN OF THE TOWN & A NIGHT AT THE TEATRE

TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY AND IT IS ALSO A SPECIAL DAY AS WE SWEAR IN A NUMBER OF NEW FREEMEN/WOMEN AND AFTERWARDS WE HAVE AN EVENING AT THEATRE SEVERN WATCHING A MAD COW PRODAUCTION. WHAT BETER WAY TO SPEND A BIRTHDAY THAN THAT?

SWEARING IN OF NEW FREEMEN OF THE TOWN

Today we went to the Castle to swear in a number of new Freemen and Women. It is a special time for both them and myself as it is a true honour to be Mayor of Shrewsbury and to carry out this ancient ceremony.

Below is a pictorial of that event I hope that you enjoy the pictures, as a picture is worth a thousand words, and is easyer than reading my blog.

The Gild of Freemen of Shrewsbury exists to protect the Legality of the Freedom; to promote the historical institution of the Freedom and to inform interested parties about the development of medieval Towns.

The Group provides support for the Office of Mayor and charity work is aimed at all interested parties in the Town.

Membership of the Gild is available to all hereditary Freemen of Shrewsbury. Freemen of other towns or cities are eligible to be Associate members.

Eligibility to be sworn is by patrimony, in Shrewsbury (ie. by direct male line) from a male ancestor who, either had been a Freeman (Burgess) of Shrewsbury before the 1835 Reform Act, or had been sworn a Freeman after that date

Please note: Freemen should not be confused with a completely different organisation, the Freemasons – whom the Oxford Dictionary defines as “members of an International Fraternity for mutual help and friendship”.

After the pictures the new Freemen and their families went off to spemd time together over lunch. This will be my last swearing in ceremony before my term as Mayor finishes, so it was also a very special ceremony for the Mayoress and myself.

EVENING AT THEATRE SEVERN TO BE ENTERTAINED BY MAD COW PRODUCTIONS

Tonight we went along to the Walker Theatre at Theatre Seven to watch the Mad Cows Production of the Drowsy Chaperone, as with all Mad Cow productions our entertainment was guaranteed. They always give you value for money and you always leave knowing that you have to attend their next production and the waiting is the hard part.

Mad Cow Productions is a Shropshire based amateur theatrical company set up in 2003 by Alex Hinton and Lisa Lowarch. Its aim is to create high quality theatre for the people of Shropshire, with high production values and strong performances, at an accessible price.

Their show tonight was fantastic and those words do not really do it justice. It was fun and the time went to quickly. Oh yes and at the start the band played a tune and everyone sang Happy Birthday to me I was as red as these words are, honest I was. But it was a fantastic night well done Mad Cow. See you all soon.

  1. Valda Cross says:

    Dear Sir,

Would it possible for me to find out if my husband’s father was sworn in as a Burgess. I can trace the Cross family line back to 1500 and something and they were all sworn in as Burgesses, in fact some of them were Mayors of the Town itself during the 19th century. My husband is named Ian David Cross, dob 19/04/50 son of Ernest Locksley Cross, dob 11/08/1909 who was a son of Ernest Llewellyn Cross dob 7/08/1879 sworn a burgess in 1903 and sadly died 21 Mar 1918.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. We do know that Ernest Locksley Cross did attend the Shrewsbury School but not much more than that

    Thank you

    valda Cross

    • Hi I will pass this information onto the Freemen of Shrewsbury who have certain records and I will also ask the Town Clerk to look back on our own data base, this is the data base that all applications are veriyfied against.

      • Valda Cross says:

Thank you so much for this. I’m grateful for any information that you can pass on to us.

        Yours sincerely

        Valda Cross
