28th MARCH 2012 THE DAY SHREWSBURY HAD TWO MAYORS OF SHREWSBURY IN TOWN

TWO MAYORS OF SHREWSBURY! MANY FEEL THAT I AM MORE THAN ENOUGH. BUT TODAY WE MET THE MAYOR OF SHREWSBURY NEW JERSEY USA IN THE MAYORS PARLOUR AND THEN WENT ON A TOUR OF THE AREA.

Yep today we did have two mayors of Shrewsbury in town and when we knew that the Mayor of Shrewsbury NJ USA was visiting our town we invited him and his wife to the Guildhall Mayors Parlour for a coffee, we then took them to the Castle and then went to Attingham Park. At Attingham we were warmly welcomed and I do have to say when we introduced Donald Burden as Mayor of Shrewsbury, the reply was sorry we know you are the Mayor so who is he, then we told them he was from Shrewsbury New Jersey and he was in fact the Mayor over there they really did give Donald and his wife Mary Lea the regal tour. All of the guides were in period costume and that made it even more special for our guests. We had lunch at the cafe in what the American call and quoted in the Shropshire Star as “we ate our lunch in the back yard”.

As always Attingham has that special feel and with the added information from the guides on hand our guests had a real feel of how life had been all those years ago. Shrewsbury NJ was founded in 1662, has a smaller population than my Council Ward of Monkmoor, with just over a total of 3,800 residents, Monkmoor has over 3,300 registered to vote. Donald has six other Councillors to help him (I wish I had the same at times) of course Shrewsbury Shropshire has over 70,000 residents with 17 Councillors.

Below is a pictorial of our day and our travels, I hope you enjoy.

After we left Attingham we travelled back to the Guildhall via the Roman remains at Wroxeter. At the Guildhall we exchanged gifts and I put on my Civic Robe and Chain whilst Donald tried on the Mayoral Chain I had been wearing all day. I had the feeling that he liked the idea of Mayors wearing a chain of office, I wonder if Shrewsbury NJ will soon have an official chain of office.

We had another engagement to attend so we gave Donakd and Mary Lea a lift back to The Lion Hotel as we had to pass there on our way. We really did have an enjoyable and informative day. How often does Shrewsbury have two Mayors of Shrewsbury walking the streets together I ask myself?

Also take a look at this page where Mayor Burden talks about his visit to our village. http://redbank.patch.com/articles/a-visit-to-a-shrewsbury-across-the-pond

I really do hope that these articles do start to bring more of our friends from over the pond to visit Shrewsbury, and this could just be the start of great things maybe some Destination Shrewsbury notices could be sent over to them. That is if there are any officers from Shropshire Council reading this blog.

SHROPSHIRE’S YOUNG MUSICIAN FINAL GALA CONCERT AT THEATRE SEVERN’S WALKER THEATRE

This evening we attended the Walker Theatre in Theatre Severn to watch the final of Shropshire Music Services Shropshire Concerto Competition. The final was against four fantastic young musicians, all worthy winners in their own right, but there had to be only one winner. Whilst we were waiting to enter the Walker Theatre I noticed Johnty O’Donnell (BBC Radio Shropshire) with Eric Smith so I informed Johnty of the second Mayor of Shrewsbury being in town and staying at the Lion Hotel, in case Eric wished to talk with him on his morning show. You know me never miss a chance to push good news and this was a rare chance for Radio Shropshire.

We then found our seats and I found myself next to the poor guy who was to judge this competition, rather him than me. The four finalists were Dorit Hasselberg, Vincent Ko, Galin Ganchev and Zoe Mountford.

The first part we heard from Dorit and Vincent then we had the interval and the second part we listened to Zoe and Galin. I had seen and listened to all four a number of times before and when I knew Galin was there I had a feeling that he would win as he is truly a fantastic musician. When Eric Smith asked the judge to come down and name the winner I was right it was Galin Ganchev. I feel he did do enough to win.

Galin is a pupil at Shrewsbury School. Please click on the following link to go to the Shrewsbury School Web-Site to read a little more. Thank you: http://www.shrewsbury.org.uk/page/latest-news-beyond-classroom
