20th MARCH 2012 TWO ENGAGEMENTS = A TRUE MULTI-CULTURAL DAY

FORM OPENING AN ISLAMIC CENTRE AT SHREWSBURY COLLEGE TO AN EVENINGS ENTERTAINMENT AT THEATRE SEVERN BY CONCORD COLLEGE WITH THEIR ANNUAL CONCERT MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Explore Islam – an event run by Staffs Uni, Shrewsbury College and QLA

Our first engagement was at Shrewsbury College where we opened the Islamic Centre. We attached ourselves to a group of young children who had come to find out about Islam, as we toured the venue we all learnt so much about Islam and were free to ask questions or as I always do interupt the talk with questions regarding many aspects of their religion. At lunchtime we had some fantastic Indian food brought in by John and his team from their base in Greyfriers.

After lunch we tagged on to a group of older students and realised that they had the same questions as did the morning group, so it was that we all took away a lot of new information and understanding about Islam. My wife was struck by the lovely artwork that was on display and was interested in how they did some of the fine work that was needed to get such detail.

The event was supported by volunteers from the local Muslim community. We also Learnt about Muslim beliefs and values, we   Followed the route of the pilgrimage and learnt about life in a Muslim home.

Time was again against us and we had to leave so that we could get ready for our next engagement.

THEATRE SEVERN CONCORD COLLEGE ANNUAL CONCERT

This evening I attended the Annual Concord College Concert. I have to say here and now, that sitting in the front row watching this powerful display of talent on stage was mind blowing. The concert was based around the students and from where in the world they came from. They called them forums, so we had The Malaysia Forum and a group of Malaysian students did their traditional song and dance, then we had the African Forum, the Chinese Forum and so on right through the evening.

So by the end we felt as if we had been taken on a journey around the world by these young talented students. I have to tell you that these students are academic students not art and dance students, so it truly was a fantastic effort that they put in to get this high level of performance.

The College has around 450 students and on the night over 250 of them were on stage performing for us, this just shows the commitment that both staff and students have to put on such a high quality concert. The money raidsed went towards the Rotary Club and WI. At the end they had a standing ovation and so they should as they deserved it and more for the show they put on. FANTASTIC WELL DONE.

It was with great pleasure and an honour to go up on stage at the end and give a vote of thanks to the students for entertaining us and to the staff at the college for helping to put it all together. It was a special night and will stay with me forever.

But as they say all good things come to an end and this evening had to end and on that note we all left the theatre happy and entertained and headed off home as the students got onto their buses and went back to Concord.
