TODAY WAS MY SERVICE IN STATE AT SHREWSBURY ABBEY
The weather changed for the day bringing us a relief from the damp cold. The Abbey was almost full with over 180 people in attendance, including the Chairman of Shropshire Council along with many Mayors from all over Shropshire as well as Wrexham and Kidderminster. I was also very pleased that the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire and the High Sheriff of Shropshire also attended, a great honour for me to have them both at my Service in State.
During the service the Town Clerk Helen Ball gave a short talk explaining my role as Mayor and spoke highly of my wife The Mayoress Tricia, as I am the one who took up politics and my wife supported me, then when it comes to being the Mayor, Tricia found herself in the front line as Mayoress. Without her support I would not have been able to carry out my duties as Deputy Mayor let alone this year as Mayor. So a big thank you to Tricia from me is in order here.
My Equerry Holly Brown gave a short talk on how her role within the Mayorality had other young people to gain an insight into the role of the Mayor, its history etc, she also said it had helped her to develop strengths that is helping her with Uni.
Then Victoria Walker (TORR) gave a short talk on how one of the Mayors Initiatives had helped her to gain her D o E Gold Award by helping her to spend a week on board a tall ship from Falmouth to Portsmouth via a stop off in France. You can read all about TORR and her adventures by clicking on the TORR part of the masthead at the top of this page.
After the service we moved to the Wildlife Centre for something to eat and drink.
At the Wildlife Centre we were treated to a lovely spread and I was able to talk with many there, but did not get chance to eat. It was a little while into the tea that we noticed that some were missing and we found them upstairs unaware of the food below, by this time some had already left, my Son and his family being one and I can only apologise to those who missed out and must have felt we had cheated them. Those who we found upstairs were brought down where they were able to eat and be part of the group. The upstairs had been opened so that people could find space to relax and chat after they had got their food, we did not realise that there were two ways into the room. We live and learn, as I said I do apologise for those that missed out.
I would like to finish by saying a big thank you to all of you for making this day a special day in my year as Mayor. Thank you.
