This evening we set off down the A5 to Telford as guests of the Sea Cadets at their Telford Headquarters. It is always a honour to be asked to attend any function that involves young people and to be asked to attend the only Sea Cadet unit within Shropshire is fantastic. Although their HQ is in Telford they have Cadets from Shrewsbury as well as other towns outside of Telford and it is important that we remember that fact, it would be nice if we had enough young people interested in joining a new Sea Cadet Unit in Shrewsbury if one was started.
That leads me onto another fact that shows how small a world we live in as the Officer in charge of Telford Sea Cadets bagan his time with the Sea Cadets under a certain Lt Commander Fred Bates, Who I hear you ask. Well I used to work with Fred Bates and remember when he was in charge of the Shrewsbury Sea Cadets when Shrewsbury had their own unit, and on the Ward room wall was a picture of him right in the middle with the Telford Officer in charge as a young cadet in the second to back row, and no I will not say how long ago that was but I can still remember that time as if it was yesterday.
But this evening was all about the Unit being reviewed and it was their night. Also attending this evening as part of the Chain Gang was Cllr Malcolm Smith Mayor of Telford and Wrekin, Cllr Leslie Street Mayor of Wellington and Yours Truly. Also attending was the Cadet Padre and the Comandant of the Rifles. As I say the important people were the young Cadets and their parents, so please take a look at the pictorial below of the events that night. Enjoy and see if you know any of them pictured, bet you will.
After the parade and inspection we retired to the Ward room before we had a tour of the unit.
After the tour we assembled on the deck ready to hand out awards. I feel that this is always the best part as it shows how well these young people have done as they have to earn these awards and should feel proud of themselves when they receive one.
Below one special award for 36 years service to the Sea Cadets, Well done.
The evening went past very quickly and it was then time to head off towards Shrewsbury. I can say on everyones behalf, thank you to the Sea Cadets for a truly fantastic evening and you should feel very proud of yourelves for what you have done over the past twelve months and even longer in many cases.
CIVIC SERVICE NEXT SUNDAY 12th February 3pm
My Civic Service will be held on the 12th February 2012 at 3pm in Shrewsbury Abbey and I can now say followed by tea at the Shropshire Wildlife Trust Centre Abbey Foregate. If you are planning on coming to the service please make sure that you let the Mayors Secretary Carol Pullen know by either phoning her on 01743 257655 or return the bottom part of the invitation if you have one. As reported in the Shropshire Star, I am campaigning to have the footbridge from the Frankwell Car Park to the Riverside Shopping Centre called “The Zutphen Bridge”. As many will know that we are twinned with Zutphen a town in Holland and this connection between the two towns goes back further than the official 1977 Twinning ceremony, also further back than the Second World War. In fact our association with Zutphen goes back as far as 1586, when a certain Sir Philip Sidney was killed whilst attempting to push the Spanish out of Zutphen. In Zutphen they have Shrewsbury a traffic island named after Shrewsbury, as they are Proud in being twinned with Shrewsbury, I feel we should show our pride in a similar way and what better than a bridge.
