10th NOVEMBER 2011 RECEIVE OUR VISITORS FROM ZUTPHEN

OUR TWIN TOWN OF ZUTPHEN SEND A PARTY OVER TO SEE HOW WE COMMEMORATE THE FALLEN  FROM WARS AND CONFLICTS THROUGH REMEMBRANCE

This lunchtime our guests from Zutphen arrived at the Guildhall and I welcomed them in the Mayors Parlour, many of thos who arrived on this visit I knew from my visit to Zutphen in May this year. Also with them on this trip was the Deputy Mayor of Jutphen as well as the three young students that hosted our young students who also went to Zutphen with me in May. So it was a welcome of old friends as well as making new ones, this is what twinning is all about.

After a short welcome we took the Deputy Mayor and a Councillor called Frans  on a mini tour of Shrewsbury so that they had an idea of what the town has to offer, one such place that they liked was the small store called Appleyards on the top of the Cop and start of High Street. We also visited the Hive, to show what we have on offer for the young as well as many activities for the older people in the evenings. They were well impressed by both and even ordered some fine cheese to take back with them.

We then headed back to the Guildhall for a light tea before taking the Deputy Mayor to the Prince Rupert where he had booked into for his stay, the others on the trip stayed with host families throughout the town.

In the evening the Mayoress and myself collected the Deputy Mayor and took him and Frans to the Lion Hotel for a meal. They have not stopped talking about it since as it was a very nice meal and removed all the stories they had been told about what boring food we in England eat. They really were impressed.

Below is a picture of a starter and the English cheese selection that Frans decided on having. I did not take a picture of his main course as he was well into it before I could get the camera out.

Afterwards Cllr Alan Townsend picked up Frans an took him back to his place as he was his host and we walked the Deputy Mayor back to the Rupert.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION – REMEMBERANCE DAY  11 / 11 / 11 /  11

I will join the Royal British Legion representatives in the Square at 10.45 for a two minutes silence. So I hope you come and join us so that we can have shared that special moment together to remeber those who died in both World Wars as well as all the other conflicts including those taking place in Afganistan.

Also there will be a Rememberance Parade that I will lead on Sunday 13th November, leaving Shrewsbury Castle at 09.15. Also in attendance of this civic procession will be other dignitaries along with members of the R.A.F. Army, Navy and Service organisations. Music will be provided by the First Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment Bugles, Pipes and Drums.

Followed by a service at St Chads Church, this is then followed by the wreath laying in the Quarry at the War Memorial.

Followed by a march past along St Chads Terrace

So please come and see this take place, line the route. This is the 90th anniversary year of the Royal British Legion and they are needed now more than ever, so your support at this time is really important if the RBL are to be able to support those who need that help.
