As you will know we have our weekly Mayoral planning meetings and today was that day. With Robert our Mayors Officer fresh from his holidays sporting a tan of the shade of shall I say light rust we went through our next weeks engagements, as well as the weekly signing of cheques. Today I also signed a number of certificates for the enrolment of Freemen that will be carried out at Shrewsbury Castle.

We also had some arranging to do for something that will be happening next weekend, but that is at this moment in time exempt, with only a small number of senior officers in the know. So to find out what this is about you will have to keep watching this space. Sorry but with modern methods of media our exempt item would be all over the world within minutes of it being posted. When I am able to inform you it will become plain why I could not give details before hand.

This evening we visitied the Greenhous Meadow for the third Friday in a row for a meal and celebration. This time it was the 1119 Squadron annual dinner and presentation evening.

It was made even more special due to the fact that our two Mayoral equerries came from 1119 Squadron, Warrent Officer Craig Bellis and Flt Sgt Holly Brown. (Holly has just left 1119 to attend Uni) She still remains in post as equerry, both will be seen with us for the Remembrance Services, other events plus other official functions.

Once again the food was fantastic, all of the Cadets along with the instructors made it a really fun evening, a number of past air cadets attended who have since gone on to join the services. The presentation of awards is always something that I love to see, and tonight I was invited to hand out a few to some very special young people. They are Proud of their Squadron, their Town and we are Proud of them for being such good community roll models, a credit to their parents, teachers, instructors and their fellow Squadron members.

I hope to have some photographs taken on the night to post with this article soon. It was a real honour to have been invited and to have been part of this specila evening. We left at midnight but we left most of the cadets and a few instructors and parents dancing the night away. Oh how nice it is to be young.

If any of you would like to know more about the Air Training Corps, please read below some basic info from part of their web-site.

I would like to take time on behalf of the Mayoress, myself and the people of Shrewsbury to thank the Greenhous Meadow and its staff for such a lovely meal they always put on and in such a fantastic venue, just a shame I never seem to be there when there is a home match being played.

Welcome to the 1119 Shrewsbury Sqn Parents page. We hope that the information you here to give you a better understanding of how the Air Training Corps and particular the Shrewsbury Squadron work. It should also give you a better idea of what it is that the cadets get up to and some of the opportunities on offer to them. In addition to cadets the Air Training Corps would not work without the help and support of parents and adult staff. If you do have any questions or suggestions please feel free to contact us .

Parade Nights

We meet on Monday and Wednesday nights. We ask that the cadets arrive at 18.50. Final parade is at 21.30. The cadets should be at the main gate by 21.45.

At present the cost per cadet is £ 7 per month. We request that this be paid via a standing order. Cadets are not required to pay until they are enrolled.

Weekend activities and camps will have an additional charge. This is purely to cover the cost of the activity and wherever possible we try to keep the price as low as we can to allow all cadets to take part.

If you have any issues over the cost of activities please contact us.

The ATC is a voluntary organisation and cadets are free to leave at any time. We do ask that cadets attend both parades nights during the week but appreciate that this is not always possible. If there are any problems with attending please let us know and we’ll do what we can to help. We do ask that if a cadet decides to leave that we are informed and that any uniform or equipment is returned so that it can be used by other cadets.

Certain events throughout the year are classed as mandatory attendance, around 5 times a year. These tend to be important events either for the Sqn or the wider community. Examples of this include Remembrance Parade, Annual inspection, etc. Rather then cadets volunteering to attend they should provide a reason as to why they are unable to attend. Cadets are given lots of warning as to when these events are coming up and we would like to ask that they are able to attend them.

Details of events

We endeavour to give cadets all the details of upcoming events with as much notice as possible. This will include dates, timings, costs and where possible an estimated time when the cadets will arrive back at Copthorne barracks. We appreciate that this is not always passed on to parents so the Sqn calendar will contain details of upcoming events.
