Tonight I chaired the Town Councils Full Council meetig at the Guildhall, starting at 18.00 hrs. It started off with the Rev Richard Hayes saying prayers. He was standing in for Prb Mark Thomas who had a family bereavement, our thoughts go out to Mark and his family at this sad time.

The normal council business was taken care of and went very quickly, with very little on the agenda to cause any great debate.

Item 13 on the agenda was of great importance for the town of Shrewsbury though, as there was a presentation to be made by Yours Truly, to a committee/body of people who for many years had been working to get Shrewsbury through the accreditation process of gaining the “Fairtrade” status for Shrewsbury.

It started off back in March 2010 when Cllr Kenny proposed and the then Deputy Mayor seconded, that the Town Council should support the Shrewsbury Fairtrade Group which was keen to seek Fairtrade status for the town. One part of the criteria was to gain support from the Local Council. It was agreed at that meeting thet the Town Council would promote Fairtrade and raise awareness, procuring Fairtarde products for the use at Council/Mayoral events and encourage local businesses to offer Fairtrade products.

This has reulted in the Fairtrade Status being awarded this month to the Town, at tonights meeting I handed over the award and photographs taken with the aim of getting this good news story into the local media.

The campaign I am currently heading through the Chronicle and Shropshire Star Newspapers

Definitely this fits our logo and what my campaign is all about and the Fairtrade status is something we should all be proud of and we should all promote at every opportunity.

This will be one of our proud moments to write about in the Shrewsbury Chronicle very soon.
